On April 25, Japan marked an important milestone in epilepsy awareness with the official opening of the first-ever Purple Day® Café in Nagoya.

Created to raise awareness about epilepsy, reduce stigma, and foster a stronger sense of community, Purple Day® Café represents a new and inspiring model of support that extends far beyond medical care.

The café was established as a welcoming and inclusive space where people with epilepsy, their families, friends, and supporters can gather, connect, and feel understood. At the same time, it serves as a visible platform for spreading awareness of Purple Day® throughout Japan and encouraging greater public understanding of epilepsy.

Inside the café, visitors can purchase handmade Purple Day® goods created by members of the organization, including accessories, cup mats, sponges, and other unique items. These products are more than just merchandise. They represent creativity, empowerment, and meaningful participation within the epilepsy community.

Purple Day® Café also provides valuable vocational opportunities for members, many of whom are patients from one of the organization’s clinics. Through hands-on work experience and daily interaction with customers and the local community, members are able to build confidence, develop skills, and strengthen social connections.

To further promote epilepsy awareness, café staff proudly wear official Purple Day® T-shirts each day, helping bring visibility and conversation about epilepsy into the local community.

The Story Behind Purple Day® in Japan

The director of Fukuchikai company, Dr. Toshi Fukuchi.

More than ten years ago, Dr. Toshi Fukuchi discovered Purple Day® at The Anita Kaufmann Foundation’s booth while attending American Epilepsy Society Annual Meeting and was inspired to bring the movement to Japan. Wanting to spread epilepsy awareness beyond small patient circles, he worked with epilepsy specialists across the country to organize Purple Day® events in a bright, positive, and approachable way.

For Toshi, epilepsy care is not only about controlling seizures but also about helping people live joyful and fulfilling lives. This belief has guided his efforts to expand Purple Day® activities throughout Japan and continues to inspire initiatives both nationally and internationally.

A Mission Beyond Medical Care

The vision behind Purple Day® Café is rooted in the belief that epilepsy support should go beyond treatment alone. True support also means empowerment, inclusion, creativity, dignity, and community.

By creating spaces where people feel welcomed, valued, and able to contribute meaningfully, the organization hopes to challenge misconceptions about epilepsy and inspire a more inclusive society.

As the leading organizations supporting Purple Day® initiatives in Japan, the team behind Purple Day® Café is honored to share its story as part of the growing global Purple Day® movement and to contribute to raising epilepsy awareness worldwide.

The opening of Purple Day® Café is not only a first for Japan (and the rest of the world), it’s a powerful example of how community-centered support can create lasting positive change.

A Larger Community of Support

Purple Day® Café is part of a much broader support network dedicated to improving the lives of people living with epilepsy and mental health challenges in Japan. This network includes:
  • Three clinics offering outpatient services as well as day and night care centers
  • 24/7 mobile mental health support providing outreach, crisis intervention, and practical assistance to members whenever needed.
  • A supported living center where individuals can develop independent living skills.
  • A home psychiatric nursing station called HOPE
  • Two cafés, including Purple Day® Café
  • A jazz café-bar and live house that also creates employment opportunities for members
Together, these services form a comprehensive and compassionate community where individuals can access medical care, mental health support, social connection, creative opportunities, and pathways toward greater independence.
