I was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 13. At 19, I suffered third-degree burns from a seizure in which I landed on a hair straightener. After the extensive time in the hospital, my medications were changed and since that day, I have been seizure free. On February 24, 2019, I will be seizure free for 8 years. I think more people need to be made aware of what epilepsy is and that it can truly happen to anyone. I was made fun of, looked at awkwardly and not to mention experienced high-stress environments that I had to learn how to overcome in my own way. I as well experienced going to the doctors more than a typical teenager, making it difficult on my parents and even me as an adult today when it comes down to medical costs. I want to be here for others and their families. I want them to know there is a higher point, there is a light, and I want to educate others. Every year, I share my story. And every day, I wear a burn/scar that speaks for me. I understand these families and individuals because I am them. We need to come together.
