Melanie Hovland

I am a 29 year-old from Dallas, TX. I am married to my best friend and love of my life, John Ross. I just ran my first half marathon and I have officially caught “the bug” and want to run more! I also love hiking and walking our dogs, Deandra (4 year-old border collie/beagle mix) and Dennis (2 year-old pit bull) – They are truly our precious babies! I am a writer for an educational company and my husband is a chef (I know, I am so lucky :)) so we stay pretty busy but also enjoy our downtime.

I started having grand mal seizures when I was 22; however, I only have them when I sleep so I didn’t know that I was having a seizure. It wasn’t until my husband saw me have one a couple years later that I knew what I was having was a seizure. I got on medication and I was seizure-free for two years but over the past year, I have started having seizures again (once every few months). I am lucky because I only have seizures when I am sleeping so I am no danger to myself or others. I try to keep a positive attitude after having a seizure but it can be difficult because seizures are so scary and I feel down and anxious the day after I have a seizure.

All in all, though, this is a very blessed life I have been given and as long as I have the ones I love close to me, I need not want!
